3Dfx Voodoo Graphics        07 Jul 1998

Info:

Based on the well-tested 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics chipset, almost every 3D program has a patch available for this chipset.  This card has 2 MB texture memory and 2 MB frame buffer, limiting it to 800x600x16 resolution without z-buffer, 640x480x16 with z-buffer. FS98 does not use z-buffer.  Will not render in a window.  This card connects to your 2D card, and to your monitor.  When an application requests 3D, your 2D card is ignored and the Voodoo card does all the work.  There has been some grumbling about the passthru cable corrupting the 2D signal at high resolutions.  The Voodoo Graphics chipset is currently the King of the Hill when it comes to games and image quality.  The new Riva128 will beat it only when running on a Pentium2/233 or better.

Multiplayer chat in full-screen 3D mode:

"When you initially start flying online, start off in 2d mode, with your chat box open.  Then, hit Alt-enter to switch to 3d mode.  Immediately after, hit Control-Enter, which closes the chatbox, thereby allowing messages to scroll across your screen.  Ok, now u can read what other people are saying.  To type a message for others to here, follow these steps:
1. Hit the Enter key
2. Type your message
3. Hit the Enter key to send
4. Hit Control Enter so you will be able to read the messages again
Follow the above 4 steps each time you want to chat.  Again, it's not as simple as the 2d method, but, life is a compromise. ;)  Thanks again to Zzrocket for showing me this.  No credit wanted here, just sharing the info.

BTW, on my "old" cpu (the AMD K5-133) I was running Memphis b2. And was trying the thing with 2 monitors, it worked fine.... BUT.. When i was putting the 2nd GFX in (a S3Virge) to do the extra monitor, thing got a bit slower. Then when I was showing something on the 2nd, it went from normaly (without 2nd GFX) 12-16 fps in meigs to something around 6-8 fps !

Comments: 2D = 5.0 "Similar 2D and 3D results in benchmarks 3 and 4 point out one of two things - that the Monster 3D isn't good at drawing instrament panels (which I've read in the newsgroup is primarily drawn as pixels [bitmaps] rather than shapes [textures]), or that the Stealth64 I have is really good at accellerating 2D graphics." Editors note: probably the former.
