Gawd!  That plane!  As she was referred to in the 60's ..."A missile with a man in it". With no tip tanks....she looks the part for sure!   Wonder if the 1st test pilot to fly her, when walking up to her for the 1st time said "Are you sure those tiny fins you guys laughingly call "wings" are going to lift her off the ground?" 😲

Love the next to last pic....great angle!

Superb, as usual. A good friend of my dad was one of the first Luftwaffe officers to fly her. He flew with a couple of colleagues in early 1960 from Düsseldorf first to New York on Lufthansa, then on to LA on TWA. From there they went to Lockheed in Burbank, where they first saw the F104. From Burbank they were transported the next day in a DC-3 to Palmdale in the Mojave desert. All of them had extensive experience in T-33s and F 84Fs. But nothing prepared them for what they were to experience with this rocket in the next couple of weeks 🙂

I remember all of this, because when I had my first flight in it in the early 1970s as a passenger and officer myself, my dad told me this story. Btw, you won't last very long without the wingtip tanks 😄😄

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

That is an interesting Story,  i never saw one of those planes that near in real live..

About the wingtip tanks; as i said it was only a training flight so only had a short airborne time.

cheers 😉
