Loving the bad weather in the UK right now!

The jet stream has been diverted to the Med, hence this pool of cold air over NW Europe. Due to end Sunday with low pressure bringing southerly winds and rain. Hope it reaches you. 😁💦

By that time I'm hopefully in London, where I'm scheduled to spend the Christmas holiday 🙂 Initial weather report for the Saturday morning flight to Gatwick is looking good.

You live in a country where you get heavy snow most days in winter every year. The UK gets a few days of snow that settles every 5-10 years. Big difference.

Settles every five to ten years? Do what? Sorry to be a pedant but that's simply untrue.

Yup, settles every year in Scotland. I should know I ski there every year.

To be honest, down here in the relatively warm, wet south west it has only settled perhaps three times in the last decade.

Yeah, we’ll get snow on parts of the moors and other high ground every winter but the last time we had a full on blizzard with two to three feet of drifting snow was over forty years ago.

Our modern infrastructure does have trouble coping with minor amounts of snow because generally it was built and is maintained on the cheap.

It fell to -15°C in Scotland yesterday and -7°C here in Cheshire overnight. This is the coldest spell since 2011. I know because I run a weather station. The Met Office don’t drum up fear as you suggest. They report the weather and issue warnings where necessary.

The temperature hit 100°F here last July. Not technically a heatwave (that is minimum 3 days) but it broke records across the UK and Europe.

And don’t venture into strikes which is political.

Since California is famous for good weather:

In one  half the State (the huge big green valley in the center of the State) averages about 20 days every year over 100F. And in one half the State (Sierra Nevada) temps will be -30F (-34C) at night for maybe 20 days every year.

For about 50 days a year the West Coast of the Northern half of California and also all that big green central valley will have very dense fog. Maybe 10 days a year traffic can slow down to 10MPH on the freeways / highways or completely stop.

Those temps don’t sound too bad. No wonder California is one of the most desirable places to live.

The lowest temps in the UK are close to where Balmoral Castle is located in NE Scotland. The late Queen spent the summer there and died there.

I suspect it means that the snow stays on the ground.

How many UK airports need snow removal each winter? Very few.

Aside from higher ground in rural national parks and their surrounds, the UK sees very few days that are impacted by snowfall that settles and persists.

Some gritting on the roads usually deals with the 2mm or so dusting of snow that we may get.

The British Met Office has just issued a weather warning for Sunday…

A band of snow is expected to move northeast across the UK on Sunday, in most places lasting two to four hours before turning to rain.

And that precisely is why snow can cause short-term disruption. Being on the crossroads of maritime, continental and Arctic airstreams there is a constant battle as to which one wins. For the last week it’s been Arctic. Monday sees the brief return of maritime.

The milder spell on Monday won’t last long before colder conditions return but nothing as bad as we have now.

-8.8°C this morning.

Excellent! Because we haven't had any yet here. EDIT. In fact it's a lovely bright and clear winters day with little wind. 4 degrees.
