Interesting, because I consider the BS TBM 850 to have one of the best flight models 🙂 It is one of the few aircraft in the sim that give a feeling of actually flying through air.

To be fair to the TBM, flight sims in general suffer from not being able to trim the aircraft correctly.  Look away from the screen and you will often look back to the aircraft rolling/pitching wildly.  I have just retired, so one of the toys I will buy is a force feedback yoke from Brunner.  Reviews describe how much more accurately the aircraft can be trimmed and flown.

Yeah, I know I am in the small minority that doesn’t like this plane. I was using it as an example of how these top 5 lists are highly subjective. On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoy the Black Square Caravan and fly it regularly.

  2. I watch Overkill and enjoy his videos somewhat. He is very passionate about MSFS, but he also receives lots of freebies from developers and vendors and doesn’t really provide an unbiased review. And lots of his videos are first impressions, not thorough reviews. He often gets new stuff so I watch to see the new gizmos.  Not knocking him because he does seem like a genuine guy. But for real aircraft insight, I watch and trust Into the Blue Simulations.

Also, top aircraft is highly subjective based on what’s important to a simmer and the type of flying they do. There are definitely a few aircraft that overshadow everything else, but beyond that it really comes down to personal bias. For example, many people would argue the BS TBM 850 is top tier. And if you like systems depth and fidelity that would be true. But I strongly dislike the flight model and have only flown it 4-5 times. It’s the only plane I regret buying. But for example it’s one of Overkill’s favorites. I don’t like it because while in VR if I look away for more than a few seconds, the plane starts rotating on it’s central axis. Only an issue though for those who prefer to hand fly! Also I don’t like the low visibility from cockpit view while in VR. Like I said, most aircraft will be perceived differently by your personal bias.

Everyone considering a motion rig has also keep in mind that you have to have the space and that these things are loud. So unless you have a secluded space i.e. a Mancave, you can forget about them.

DOF Reality H3 is quiet and fits in the same space as a typical cockpit 3x5 feet. And they are very affordable compared to most other options.

  4. I also prefer their scenery even if PG is available. The other thing I appreciate is that Samscene3D provides free updates and they periodically do update previously released scenery. Their original Macau was good but felt incomplete. They released an update a few months ago and it was a signifiant update. I am underwhelmed by the new Kobe/Kyoto release, but I am confident they will enhance it at some point.

Finally, I really hope they update Vancouver to add the floating Chevron station in Vancouver Harbour. To me this was a major oversight given the city was built for a flight sim. I visited there a few years ago and that station is very crucial for the seaplane terminal. From Stanley Island, I spent a good 30 minutes just watching the twin otters take-off and land. Bliss!

no change to existing VR support! What? with all WMR headsets no longer working after the Windows 24H2 update and he calls that "no change to existing VR support"?

That’s because Microsoft Windows quit supporting WMR. That has nothing to do with MSFS 2024. MSFS team are not responsible for dropping WMR. They haven’t dropped anything, but it also looks like from what we know that they aren’t planning to enhance VR support either.

We're screwed and that has nothing to do with this Sim, it's not their fault, you'd only get a generic answer from Jorg along the lines of "it's out of our hands" or something and I wouldn't expect anything else.

Most WMR users should know their options by now, no denying it monumentality sucks.

As for VR in MSFS2024 I'll be amazed if they've added new core features, I'll just be happy if it works on a level par with the current Sim. If it has the same bugs then I'll ready my pitchfork for sure, history clearly shows they care very little for VR so my expectations are the lowest for this area than any other.

I totally understand. VR seems to be an afterthought for them and I’ve not heard anything that indicates we’ll get anything more than what we have not. So…not happy about it, but as long as 2024 supports VR similar to 2020 then I will accept it as a win.

    1) where does this leave all the current WMR headsets. I am surprised nobody brought this up at the expo, no interviewer, nothing.

    2) "The only thing confirmed is that 2024 will support Open XR and Steam VR"

could you link the source for this?

    3) "stekusteku Dec 2023

Setting in Pimax Play is for SteamVR.
Setting in PimaxXR is for OpenXR. MSFS is OpenXR application so only the setting in PimaxXR matters for MSFS.

The Foveated Rendering (no matter Fixed or Dynamic) FPS benefit in MSFS is small, up to 10%, incomparable to DCS (DCS benefits from Quad views, MSFS not).

And Dynamic Foveated Rendering is not supported in 2020 thus Fixed Foveated Rendering only nets a 10% in FPS but is still meaningful if you’re going from 40 to then 44 FPS.

SimHangar confirmed it at the Expo plus Helisimmer did last year. Read through all of his replies in the comments to the post below:

My issue is they've been trying to "fix" live weather since they broke it with SU7....2 1/2 years ago, but that conversations been done to death which leads me to expect nothing much has changed so many expectations are very low. Granted they can't be experts in every area of gaming, just pains me that what we had we lost and we've still not got it back.

I think everyone should just be patient and not jump to conclusions. There is much they have not told us. They are running a business and depend a lot on third parties to bring this all together. For all we know, they could be pursuing an alternative partner for weather data, but are not in a position to disclose that publicly for many reasons. And the default weather in 2020 is already very good and it will only get better in 2024.

It's quite old now, there are a LOT of videos on it, so you should have known what you were getting into tbh. I have a few BSq planes and I actually prefer the C414. That said, everyone has different expectations and desires. I don't care too much about failures for example, and I really like planes that feel good to hand fly. I think the C414 for 50% off was a great purchase personally.

I agree totally! I much prefer the 414 over the BS TBM 850 due to the flight model. BS makes great aircraft with systems fidelity, but when you hand-fly the 850, if you look down for more than a few seconds, the plane dips almost immediately and will rotate on the central axis.
